6 Steps to Help You Fix Your Windshield Scratches Yourself

Sometimes, it is possible to use some domestic supplies to fix minor scratches in your car’s windshield. The good news is that you can easily fix shallow scratches provided you know the right approach and products. In this article, we have shared some simple steps to help you fix scratches in your auto glass using common products. Read on to find out more.

Step #1: Use your fingernail to check the scratch depth

Your first move is to get a better idea of the depth of the scratch. You can use your fingernail to check for this. If you are unable to feel a scratch with your fingernail, you can easily fix it yourself. However, if you can feel the scratch by running your fingernail on it, we suggest that you hire the services of a professional. They use advanced tools and methods in order to repair deep scratches.

Step #2: Collect some Supplies

If the scratches are shallow, we suggest that you collect the following supplies for a do-it-yourself approach.

  • Drill
  • Tape
  • Small bowls
  • Spatula
  • Soft clothes
  • Glass cleaner
  • Water
  • Acrylic nail polish
  • Baking soda and toothpaste
  • Cerium oxide

Step #3: Remove any dust or debris from the glass

Before getting started, don’t forget to clean debris from the glass. You can use a glass cleaner and a piece of rag for this purpose. However, you don’t need to clean all of the glass at this stage. After all, you don’t want to leave your fingerprints on the glass before the actual repair work.

Step #4: Mark the Area

Once you have identified the target area, you may want to mark it. This will give you a pretty good idea of the area that should be repaired. You can outline the area using a dry erase marker. As an alternative, you may also apply some tape on the inside of the glass.

Step #5: Use the Repair Product

Next, you should prepare the product you are going to use to repair the glass. If you are going to use an acrylic product, the preparation method will be slightly different. For example, if you are going to use cerium oxide, you can use a spatula for preparing a mixture of water and powder. Once the two ingredients have been mixed, you can use them to fix the scratches.

Step #6: Apply the Product

Once the solution is ready, go ahead and repair the scratch. Based on the product you are going to use, we should follow some specific steps. For example, if you are going to apply acrylic nail polish, you should apply it to the target area and remove the excess amount.

Long story short, you can follow these steps if you want to repair your windshield on your own. Hopefully, these tips will help you get started and follow the do-it-yourself approach.
